Why Should I Use UTMs?

To achieve impactful marketing campaigns, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of their effectiveness. By implementing robust tracking mechanisms, you can make data-driven decisions instead of relying on guesswork.

This not only helps you avoid wasting resources on underperforming campaigns but also allows you to amplify well-performing ones, enhancing their effectiveness and yielding better results.

A great way to track your marketing campaigns is by using UTM codes. UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) are pieces of code that you can add to your links allowing you to easily track and analyse your website traffic.

An Example of UTMs In Practice

For instance, let’s say you have a social media post promoting your Black Friday offers to your audience. By incorporating a distinctive UTM code into the link leading to your website in that post, you can track and analyse the exact amount of traffic generated from that specific link click.

This method allows you to compare the effectiveness of various social media posts or email styles, enabling you to identify which ones yield the best results.

Armed with this information, you can then optimise your marketing strategy by amplifying the performance of the most successful posts through advertisements or by replicating similar campaigns. Harness the power of UTM codes to measure, refine, and maximise the impact of your promotional efforts.

Your Step-By-Step UTM Guide

Here’s a quick guide on how to use UTM codes in your marketing campaigns. You will need to have Google Analytics (or any other analytics platform) set up and linked to your website to be able to track your UTMs.

1. Identify Your Marketing Channels: Determine the different platforms (such as social media, email, or ads) you’ll be using to promote your content or campaigns.

2. Work out the details of the campaign so you can look back and remember which campaign your code relates to:

  • What is the ‘source’ (eg Facebook or newsletter ),
  • What is the ‘medium’ ( eg email, ads, static post),
  • What is the ‘campaign name’ (eg black_sale),
  • What are the terms (eg any specific key words you are using such as ‘black friday’),

3. Generate Your UTM Code using the information you created in step 2.

We use the free UTM code builder from Google Analytics: https://ga-dev-tools.google/campaign-url-builder/

4. Use Your URL Code

You will then have a URL you can use in your posts. If you want to shorten the code to make it look neater on social posts, then you can do this on a platform such as Bitly.

5. Track Everything

With the UTM codes in place, you can precisely analyse the performance of each marketing channel via your analytics platform. We use Google Analytics to track all of our campaigns.

6. Gain Insights & Optimise

Analyse the data to understand which channels drive the most traffic, conversions, or engagement. Use these insights to optimise your marketing efforts and boost results!
